Sanming University (SMU) is a full-time public undergraduate institution established by the People’s Government of Fujian Province. It is located in Sanming, Fujian Province, the hometown of Zhu Xi, a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar of the Song Dynasty. Sanming is also recognized as one of China’s Excellent Tourism Cities, a National Civilized City, and an emerging industrial city in Fujian Province.

SMU traces its history back to the Fujian Teacher Training School, which officially opened on December 12, 1903, and is therefore widely known as the “Cradle of Teacher Education in Fujian.” In the 2026 Shanghai Ranking’s Best Chinese Universities Ranking (Main Ranking), Sanming University was placed 381st among undergraduate universities nationwide and 14th among universities in Fujian Province.

SMU covers an area of 1,429 mu and comprises 14 schools. It offers 53 undergraduate programs and three master's degree programs in Tourism Management, Materials and Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, serving approximately 16,000 full-time students. The university employs 890 full-time faculty members, including more than 400 holding senior professional titles. The university has established a strong academic foundation, with three disciplines included in Fujian Province’s top-tier applied university development plan, six provincial key disciplines, and four provincial applied disciplines. It is also home to 15 national and provincial first-class undergraduate programs, five national first-class undergraduate courses, and 41 national and provincial research and innovation platforms.
